The Duck's Guts is the work of Vaughan Cornell, a brand designer based in Collingwood, Melbourne. The studio runs as a boutique practice — tight by design, with a trusted network of developers, 3D artists, photographers, and other creative specialists brought in when the project calls for it.
Most clients arrive at one of two places. Either they've built something genuinely good and know the brand isn't doing it justice, or something isn't working and they haven't yet identified why. Either way, the process starts in the same place: understanding the business, the audience, and the gap between them.
The work across different clients spans different sectors and styles. The approach stays consistent: rigorous strategy, deliberate design, clean execution.
WORK WITH US
[01] STRATEGY
Before anything is designed, we need to understand the business. What's the gap between how you're perceived and how you should be? Who are you actually talking to, and what do they need to hear? Strategy is the work that answers those questions. It sets the direction for everything that follows. Most clients find this phase surfaces things they knew but hadn't yet articulated, and a few things they hadn't considered at all.
[02] DESIGN
With strategy as the brief, design becomes deliberate rather than decorative. Every visual decision: colour, type, layout, hierarchy, is made to communicate something specific. The result is an identity and visual system that looks right because it is right. It also scales, built to grow with your business rather than be rebuilt every time it does.
[03] PRODUCTION
Design that exists only in a file isn't a brand. Production is where strategy and identity become real: print-ready assets, packaging files, custom website builds and digital collateral that rolls out consistently across every touchpoint. Built to be managed by your team without needing us every time.

What kind of work do you take on?
Branding and packaging, primarily. The work ranges from full rebrands and visual identity systems through to website design and build, and ongoing design retainers. We work with founders, scaling SMEs, and occasionally partner with agencies or in-house teams that need extra creative capacity.
How much do you charge for projects?
Flat fee, scoped per project. Most branding and web projects sit between $15,000 and $30,000 and take 8 to 12 weeks from kick-off to delivery. Smaller projects are considered on a case-by-case basis. The best starting point is a Brand Review. It's free, and it gives us both a clear picture of what the project actually needs before any numbers are agreed.

Do you offer retainer plans?
We do. Most retainer clients are businesses we've already worked with who need consistent creative output on an ongoing basis. Retainers are scoped individually based on what the business actually needs. If you're considering one, a Brand Review is the best place to start.

How involved do I need to be during the project?
As involved as the project needs, and no more. Most clients are time-poor founders and business owners and being managed isn't what they need. We run a structured process with clear milestones and decision points, so your input is focused and your time isn't wasted. Typically that means two or three concentrated rounds of collaboration across a project, rather than continuous back-and-forth.
Who will I be working with?
You work directly with Vaughan from brief through to delivery. For projects requiring web development, photography, or 3D work, a network of trusted specialists is brought in, briefed, directed, and quality-checked at studio level. The person you meet at the start is the person responsible for the work.
